 Bring on the Badgers

Hello Husker Fans,

First, THANKS, to all the great Husker fans who came to Coldbrew's for the B1G Opener against Illinois.  What a crowd!  The game ending was not what we wanted, but all had a good time, and it was interesting.  Saw some things that we didn't like, but some things that bode well for the future, too.  The season is far from over.

This week Nebraska welcomes the Wisconsin Badgers to Memorial Stadium in Lincoln for another hit-em-in-the-face type football game.  The Wisky Boys are coming off an unexpected loss to our neighbor to the east, Iowa, at Camp Randall.  Who'da thunk it?  They will be plenty angry and ready to play.  I think our young men will be of the same mindset after dropping one they should have won.  Looking for a tough one? Look no farther than Lincoln on Saturday.

Wisconsin is coming into the game with several injuries to key players on both sides of the ball.  Will it make any difference in the type of game they play, probably not.  They have plenty of talent waiting in the wings.  Next man up.  QB Joel Stave, 6-5, 220# likes to throw, and even though his two top receivers are out this week, he'll have several others to which he can try to make a connection.  Heads up, Nebraska secondary.  His top running back is also injured, but then again, he has more.  One a slasher type, one a pounder.  Come on Blackshirts!

The Big Red has its share of injuries, also.  Practice this week has shown backups are ready to fill those spots.  On offense, Devine Ozigbo, 5-11, 225#, has made his name known.  Nice to see a Husker running back with such speed and power.  Let's hope the line can open some holes and let him shine.  Tommy Armstrong needs to have a better game throwing, and hopefully not on third and long.  Whether his feet or someone elses, the groung game is a must.  That Wisconsin defense likes to come from all angles with different players and can just create havoc for an offense.  All you need do is look at years past to remember that scenario.  Hopefully, the weather will not be a factor, like at Illinois.  That was nasty.

This should be a very good game, as both teams have something to prove.  Let's hope our Huskers prove it more and all the way to the end.  They surely can use a Win, just like all of us.  Thinking low score this week.  These young men have been working hard to get better.  Gee, and going to school, too.

Come with us at GFN and watch the game at Coldbrew's in Roswell, 880 Holcomb Bridge Road.  The contest starts at 3:30 this Saturday.  We'll have the Raffle, the Two Minute Drill, and the Big Board.  I will be FUN.

Looking forward to seeing you there.  Don't miss it.

Hello Husker Fans,

This Saturday is B1G. The opening of B1G Conference Play. Now the real test begins  Throw out all that has happened up to now.  NOW is what matters. Oh, it's been interesting, but it's about to get WILD!!!

Nebraska travels to Champaign. Ill. to face off against the Fighting Illini for only the 12th time ever. The Scarlet and Cream hold a 9-2-1 advantage. Their Memorial Stadium holds 60,670 and has a field turf surface. From what I have read, they have a hard time filling the seats. Maybe they will make an exception for NU. If not, hope it's full of the Big Red Nation.

Illinois played fairly well in their warm-ups, and put up some impressive numbers. One could question the quality of the opposition and see just an ok start. NU, on the other hand, played to better competition, and it's sort of confusing trying to sort out what happened, exactly. One thing is for certain, improvement is needed, especially in the defensive backfield.

The Husker coaching staff and players are working hard on learning the new system and getting the right people in place. Seems like we need a bunch more. That will come in time.  Right now we've got what we've got.

Look for a really spirited contest. Illinois trying to prove the "pre-season" was not a fluke, and Nebraska trying to get better and more consistent. Illinois has a lot of talented athletes, and their experienced QB, Wes Lunt, is going to test the secondary with his arm and an arsenal of receivers. They have a pretty fair running attack, but look for Nebraska's D to pretty much take care of that.  They do have good special teams and have already blocked a couple of kicks this year. Pay attention Drew Brown and the field goal unit.

I'm looking for a pretty even contest until the fourth quarter when the Huskers get tired of playing Mr. Nice Guy, and put an end to it.  I like Huskers 38, Illini 17.

The game will be shown at 3:30 at Coldbrew's in Roswell, 880 Holcomb Bridge RD. As always, come early for a good seat, first come first served. Let's fill the place and kick off the B1G Season in style. Got some great raffle prizes and we'll play "two minute drill" at halftime.

Hope to see you there this Saturday.

Bring On Southern Miss!

Hello Husker Fans,

Well, I have to admit, it's been fairly crazy so far.  Ups, downs, boredom, excitement beyond belief.  What's next?  I know.  It's time for a visit to Lincoln by the Golden Eagles from Southern Mississippi.  (ever wonder why there's only one "m" in that word?)  This should be fairly fun.

It's Home Coming week end in Huskerland.  Wouldn't you love to be there?  I know I would.  It's a grand time.  Touring the campus, seeing old friends, and then, there's the game.  Nebraska should win this one, but look for plenty of football offered up by the opposition.  They have plenty of offense.  Their current QB has more 300 yard passing games than some guy named Brett Favre.  They came back last weekend to top Texas State, 56-50.  And that's the thing, where's the defense?  Hopefully, the Big Red will be able to practice running the ball.  Something they have not been doing too well, to date.  They certainly need to get more proficient heading into Conference play.  It's time to let all of our running backs get their reps in a game situation.  Time to figure out who wants to carry the load.  At this point, it seems no one has really come to the front.  Maybe a couple of glimpses, but really nothing solid.  Certainly not against Miami.  No fire, no grit. (no Ameer, alas.)

This will also be a test of the secondary.  The first quarter against Miami was pretty awful, but with some better-late-than-never substitutions, showed improvement as the game progressed.  This Eagle offense will put pressure on them again.  Let's see what changes may have been made at practice this week.  The linebacking corps has been hit by the injury bug, so plan on seeing the next man up all game long.  It's good in the fact that the younger guys get reps and the starters get rest and time to recover.

The Huskers should win this won fairly easily, but look for an exciting contest.

Speaking of Home Coming, it's time for GFN members and friends to come to Coldbrew's in Roswell, and join in the festivities.  We have a great place to meet, eat, and watch the game together.  Maybe, even have a refreshing beverage.  Let's show the staff and management that we appreciate them offering their facility for our fun and pleasure.  We'll have a Raffle, and with enough fans, The Big Board.

The address is 880 Holcomb Bridge Rd, Roswell GA.  The game starts at noon.  Hope to see you and yours at Coldbrew's in Roswell to cheer on our beloved Big Red!  They open at 11, so come in then for a good seat.

Hello Husker Fans,

Last Saturday's Watch Party was a lot of fun.  Everyone enjoyed the game.  Nice to see some great offensive production.  The fight dealio got a little confusing, but the under-card battles were interesting.  The main event didn't really start until after the game.  It really looked like two guys waving boxing gloves in each others face and dancing around the ring.  Sort of like Dancing With The Stars in shorts.  Not a very good fight.  Glad we didn't have to pay cover.  Late night, though, with that 8 o'clock kick-off.  But enough of that.

On To Miami!!!  This game should be a good one.  Two teams who have really only played 13 times, total, but what games they have all been.  I personally can't speak to the 1951 game, but all the rest have been battles. With the exception of one, the Rose Bowl.  Easy to forget that one.  A few even decided who would be National Champion.

That won't be this game, but it should be the typical grudge match.  With both teams fighting to get back into the conversation, a lot of bragging rights will be earned with a win.  They have a lot of really great athletes who just seem to have not been able to quite put it together.  Lots of speed and talent.  Nebraska should match up with them pretty well with a couple of questions.  Mostly in the defensive secondary.  Look for a lot of substitutions if things start to go awry there.  The defensive line of Nebraska will have to make the Miami QB nervous early, so that his timing goes bye, bye.  This will be the best team Miami has faced so far this season.  The Huskers need to play hard, and not get distracted by any chippiness that you know will be present.  It should be very exciting.  Let's hope Nebraska's offense can set an early rhythm and keep it going and knock the "wind" out of the Hurricanes.

Hope you can join GFN at Coldbrew's in Roswell, 880 Holcomb Bridge Rd. this Saturday for the 3:30 kick-off.  As always, come early for a good seat.  Let's fill the place and "raise the roof" cheering for our beloved Huskers. Also, you can renew your Membership or join GFN, if you haven't done so in the past, and take a few chances on the Raffle.  Let's fill the  place so we can play the Big Board, too.  More peeps, more fun!

Looking forward to seeing each and every one.

South Alabama, Who?

Hello Husker Fans,

The first order of business is to say a big, big, big, "Thank You All!!!" to the loyal Husker fans who came to Coldbrew's in Roswell last Saturday to cheer for our beloved young men.  It was a very exciting, back-and-forth contest between two storied teams.  The ending didn't quite go our way, live by the Hail Mary, die by it.  Not withstanding, everyone had a fun time, and it was great seeing old faces and new faces, alike.

This week is a different story, for a couple of reasons.  The first is that the opponent is South Alabama.  No relation to the Crimson Tide.  A relatively new program, but not without character and a few really good athletes, as well.  The football program has only been in existence for a few years, but they have shown themselves to be a worthy foe.  Played Bowling Green in a bowl game to end last season.  Although they had a lot of seniors leave after that, they seem to have inherited a lot of transfers from the now-defunct UAB program.  They appear to have great speed and like the big plays.  If you look at what they did last year it is quite impressive.  The Big Red had better not take them too lightly (read-McNeese State) or they could have a very long evening.  Don't look ahead, Huskers, play this one first and all the way to the end.

The game kick-off is 8:00 this Saturday, I know, it sucks.  Nothing we can do but deal with it.  Coldbrew's in Roswell is the place, 880 Holcomb Bridge Road.  Why not get there early, have dinner, and get ready to watch game number two of the 2015 Football Season.

Oh, yeah, the second reason.  Remember last year when we had the 10:30 kick-off with Fresno State, and there was a Mayweather/Pacio fight on at the same time.  Well, unfortunately, the Mayweather/somebody fight will be shown at Coldbrew's this Saturday night.  The under-card starts about 8:30 and the main event will probably be around 10-10:30.  They expect a lot of fight fans to crowd in between those hours.  It could get kinda nuts.  The football game will remain on, but on limited screens.  I suggest everyone try to sit in the room with the big screen first.  We may not be able to use that tv during the fight, but there's a lot of other tvs in that room to view the game.  I know, it sucks, but there's really nothing we can do.  If the game were at a different time, no problemo.  Send your complaints to the B1G.

Anyhooo, I'm going to be there and make the best of it.  Why don't you join me, it will be fun.  Get there early as usual so you won't have to pay the cover for the fight.  You'll get to see the game and a boxing match.  It's his last fight before retiring, so he says.  Maybe he'll get knocked out.  Never know.

As always,
Ric

Bring On BYU!!!

Hello Husker Fans,

It seems like an eternity, but here we go.  Finally, the 2015 season is about to start.  I, for one, could not be more excited.  New coach, new staff, bunch of new players, all prepared to take the field and show what they have learned.  If you went to Spring Game, you really saw nothing, and during fall camp not much has been revealed.  Oh, yeah, some hints here and there, but we won't see until Saturday, what they've got.  The experts have not been kind in their assessments, and probably shouldn't be, but we'll find out when they play.

They are not starting out with any push-over either.  BYU is a tremedous adversary with witch to begin the season.  These two teams have never met before on the field of play, so it's anyone's guess what will happen.  One thing that will happen is a hard hitting football game between two storied teams.  I believe it will be a really good contest.  Although Bronco Mendenhal lost his first 4 openers, he has gone 7-1 over the past eight years.  Don't you just love that name for a football coach?  Nebraska has not lost a home opener in "like forever".  We'll see if Mike Riley can keep it alive.

Georgians For Nebraska is once again hosting the Watch Party at Coldbrew's in Roswell, 880 Holcomb Bridge Road. If you need directions, you can find them at ga4ne.  Game time is 3:30this Saturday, September 5.  There will be games on earlier in the day so there will be people already there watching them, most likely.  The suggestion is to arrive early to grab any empty seats, and/or be at the ready to be seated when earlier patrons leave.  Ya'll know how it works by now.  First come first served.

We'll have a raffle, the Big Board, and you'll get to see folks that you haven't probably seen in a while.  Give you a chance to catch up on old home news and gossip.  Good time to renew your membership to GFN, also.

Can't wait to see each and every one.
