The first thing to do this week is say, "thank you", to the 28 or so Big Red Fans who braved the late hour and attended the Fresno St. watch party last Saturday night. The game was really fun and everybody had a great time. Lots of chances to talk to one another and make new friends. The fight was interesting, as well, but hardly a highlight. The good thing was that it was free!
Ok. So here we are. A match-up we've been waiting for a while. Hurricane Warning! Miami University, the "U". This should be a real head knocker. Don't for a minute think that their record for the past few years means anything. This is the "U" vs the Cornhuskers! There will be no love lost in this contest.
Now I don't mean to say that this will be on par with the games of before, but it should be a great game. I think that the teams are evenly matched on both sides of the ball. If you happened to watch them against Louisville, you saw that they have plenty of "big ole boys" on the line of scrimage. Both sides of it. They have fast and powerful running backs, too. They have a true freshman at quarterback who has completed 60% of his passed this season. They are going to be a handful. This will be the best defense the Huskers will see until Michigan St. in October. They are ranked nationally at #8 in total defense.
There are plenty of asides, as well. Many of the players for both teams have played together or against each other in high school. I don't think they will be signing year books on Saturday. Even though most of these present players were mere boys the last time the teams met, this will be their opportunity to try to get their schools back into the Championship conversation.
Also, on Saturday, Nebraska will be honoring the 1994 Huskers. That's the team that beat Miami to claim Tom Osborne's first National Title. We will remember all of their names. Former Husker greats Mike Rozier, Johnny Rodgers, and Eric Crouch will be at the Pinnacle Bank Arena posing with fans along with the Heisman Trophy. Wouldn't you like to have one of those?
Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend, but I will be at Coldbrew's in Roswell at 8:00 PM to see the game on the Big Screen. Why don't you and yours join GFN at 880 Holcomb Bridge Rd and have a late dinner or snack, a refreshing beverage or six, and enjoy the game with Big Red Lovers, like yourselves. I really can't think of a better way to see the game, while exiled to Atlanta, than that.
It would also afford those of you who have not yet renewed your memberships, and those of you who may want to join for the first time, to do so. Not only does it help us pay for our operating expenses, but it affords you a 15% discount on all food items. We will have our raffle, and since we didn't have it last Saturday, there will be more items on the table.
Looking forward to seeing you Saturday.
