Can you believe it's the fifth game already? It is just amazing how quickly this time of year goes by, especially when we'd like to savor every second. Not only the football part, but life in general. The cooler weather, fall colors, chores geared for getting things ready for winter. Not like the winters at home, though. No, not at all.
Which brings me to the point, home. Or in this case, Homecoming. This is the week, and don't you wish you were there. I know I do. Lots of fun activities around campus for students and alums alike. And, of course, capped off by another exciting contest on the gridiron. The Big Red is starting conference play, so all of the rest of the games will be very important.
This week's foe will be the Fighting Illini from the state of Illinois. This is also their first conference game this year. The series dates back to 1892, with Nebraska winning that first game. The over-all record against the Orange and Blue is 8-2-1. The Huskers played them in Lincoln last year, as well, with a 39-13 Big Red Victory. They are 3-1 this year with wins over Youngstown State, Western Kentucky, and North Texas, and one loss to Washington. In all three victories, the Illini came from behind to win. They have not faired well against top 25 opponents, dropping the last 17 of 18 games played, with the only win coming in 2007 against then #1 Ohio State by seven.
Of course, none of that means much concerning this year. They seem to really have a fine team, led by a former Oklahoma State starting QB in Wes Lunt. Though only a sophomore, he has shown great leadership skills and great football talent. He can make all of the throws, and likes to go deep. He has thrown for over 1200 yds. and amassed 11 TDs in the first four games. Very impressive. They have an excellent return man in V'Angelo Bentley. He's only the second Illinois player to record an interception, punt, and kick-off return for a touchdown in their history. The other guy was named Red Grange. Mean anything to you? They've got a ground pounding running back in Josh Ferguson who can also catch the ball. The team runs out of multiple formations and likes to spread the field. The defense is equally as talented. I could go on and on naming players, but you hear and see them when they play on Saturday.
The Huskers are anxious to begin B1G play. They are excited that this the Homecoming Game, and they are excited because they will be in their "all red" uniforms for this contest. They will certainly be strutting, and who could blame them. Sometimes a change is good. And fun.
Coming off of last weeks victory over Miami, Nebraska is ready. They know what they have to do, they just have to do it. Got a few bumps, and bruised players but the team, as a whole, will be fired up.
The kick-off will be at 9:00 here in the ATL. Coldbrew's is the place. 880 Holcomb Bridge Road, in Roswell. Since it is Homecoming, it would be nice to see some of the members and former members and even those who are not joiners who have not been to a watch party for a while to join us for the festivities. It's always fun and friendly. Won't you and yours meet up with GFN this Saturday night. Make it your date night with your significant other, or bring your buddies, or come solo and meet some new friends.
Hope to see you there,
Ric, Athene, Jackie, Patty, Cheryl, Ross, and Mikahla
GO BIG RED!!!
